The pre-Hispanic legend of the Fifth Sun tells that the axolotl is the figure that Xolotl, the Aztec god of fire and lightning, transformed into so as not to be sacrificed since he was afraid of death.

This piece features a fantastical and surreal style, typical of alebrijes, as it combines real animal elements with imaginary characteristics (the wings) and an explosion of color and patterns, highlighting the complexity of the design and the craftsman's skill.

The surface of the alebrije is richly decorated with intricate geometric and organic patterns. Zigzags, wavy lines, triangles, spirals, and other abstract designs are evident in a wide range of vivid colors such as Mexican pink, yellow, turquoise, white, and black, but above all, the predominant color is the intense, brilliant blue that covers most of the body and head.
