The Catrina “Amber Flower” is another example of the expression of the cultural richness of the Tehuana costume, but with an autumnal color palette and golden accents.
This beautiful handcrafted and hand-painted papier-mâché figure wears a long, pleated skirt (petticoat) in a deep burnt orange or terracotta color, reminiscent of marigold flowers or autumn leaves. The skirt is decorated with gold embroidery or floral designs.
She wears a cobalt blue shawl or rebozo draped voluminously over her shoulders and chest, painted with floral and swirling details in gold, which contrasts sharply with the orange.
Her face is that of a traditional Catrina skull, with large eye sockets and a mouth marked by a smile somewhere between naive and mocking. Her hair is tied back and decorated with a crown of orange roses, symbolizing elegance. His skeleton arms and hands are articulated, with his hands slightly open in a position of grace.
