The grasshopper, or "chapolin" in Nahuatl, is an elongated insect with thin, parchment-like wings and means "insect that jumps like a rubber ball." Legend has it that the Aztecs worshipped grasshoppers because they warned them of fires.
The surface of this alebrije is covered with elaborate patterns and designs. Lines, dots, spirals, and other geometric shapes are seen in a rich color palette that includes orange, yellow, purple, and green, among other hues.
The head stands out for its vibrant orange color on the top and around the eyes, which are large and black with yellow or orange details, creating a striking look.
The wings folded over the body have a decoration that combines blue-green with purple details and a pattern of dots or small figures in yellow and black.
As with every fantastic alebrije, fine details in the painting can be appreciated, highlighting the texture and complexity of the design, demonstrating the skill of the master craftsman.
Finely carved in copal wood, measuring 7.5" high, 7" long and 4" wide.
