The alebrije is a craft originating in Mexico. Alebrijes are imaginary beings designed by combining various fantastic animals with the physiognomy of real animals, thus creating marvelous creatures.

They are made of cardboard or paper with a wire frame, inspired by the art of cartonería, practiced in the central states of the country and Mexico City. They are also made of wood, usually copal, which is carefully hand-carved by artisans in the state of Oaxaca. Both types of alebrijes have in common the fact that they represent imaginary and fantastical beings painted in cheerful and vibrant colors.
